![]() Production at Hartley's has grown by half since its darkest days in 2000. Able at last to act on its own initiative, the company has used a combination of quality and rapid turn-around to attract new customers - benefiting from the emerging trend among textile retailers to source more of their products on a quick-response basis, to ensure that styles and colours match consumer choices. "Some companies have fallen flat on their faces by bringing in container loads of products that turned out to be the wrong products," said Mr Finlay. As for the future, Mr Finlay is careful not to give away his development plans, but he does offer one statement of principal: "If it's possible to pigment print on it, we'll have a look at it." Early success, however, does not mean the road ahead is entirely smooth, and Mr Finlay is among many in the UK textile industry calling for more government support for capital investment - especially as Hartley's adds up the thousands of pounds it has been obliged to spend to meet developing environmental regulations.
